Italy's interior ministry has banned fans Napoli Serie A set of travel outside the entire season after violence flared on the opening day of the season during the encounter with Rome.
Interior Minister Roberto Maroni announced on state broadcaster Rai that "members of Napoli fan clubs are banned from travelling for the duration of the season."
Maroni spoke after an official inquiry into the incidents on Sunday, ahead of a report due Wednesday by the national agency responsible for maintaining public order in sports events.
Five football fans - the initial reports of seven states - were arrested after violent clashes. A train was shattered as an estimated 1000 fans, mostly without tickets, boarded a train in Naples to Rome, where the match was being played. During the journey fans smashed windows and destroyed toilets and seats, causing damage estimated at EUR 500000.
Four railway workers and a ticket collector were injured and several police officers in Rome. "It is unacceptable that such incidents occur and, furthermore, we are only in the first day of the championship," Maroni said Monday.
Italian Football Federation president Giancarlo Abete said Monday there is an urgent need "to eradicate criminal groups that are contaminating the world of football."
