Arsene Wenger nonplussed by Manchester City takeover

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he did not have "a rational response" for why the United Abu Dhabi Group has taken charge of the Premier League club Manchester City in one of several million pounds deal.

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan officially become the new owner of the club on Tuesday. The arrival of the Middle East made millionaire richest club in the league - taking the mantle in the hands of Chelsea in the last five years - and also seemed to shift the balance of power within the Premier League.

Wenger, however, said that it is a mystery why we bought the club has not won a major title since lifting the League Cup in 1976. The latter were champions of England 40 years ago. In an interview in the October issue of the official magazine of Arsenal, Wenger said: "I do not know why these people are in that country.

"Apparently, they are not there to make money. Consequently, if they are not there to make money out of it, and then to be bought out of love? Well, I'm not sure these people are in favor of the city of Manchester from an early age. Then comes another question: Why are they doing? Why have bought the club? I can not find a rational response.''

"If it is just a toy for them, then it is even more dangerous. You can have 20 billionaires in the Premier League, only one can win and that will come a last. The problem is that when these people who have bought in football they get tired of it, they will leave behind? That is the real question you can ask. If your investment is purely strategic, based on market interest, then I could easily decide one day that is not strategic to be in that market more, and then will leave."

Manchester City have made a promising start for the new season and Thumper Portsmouth 6-0 on Sunday to take fifth place in the table. Arsenal lead to the classification and Wenger, who has built a number of teams in the club over the past 12 years said it was not easy to buy success.

"My thoughts are that it is good to have money in football, but it's how you use it. Basically, you still have to respect the rules," said Wenger.

"You can not have a situation where people just come and say they want to buy Cristiano Ronaldo or Fernando Torres who want to buy. That's disrespectful. These are the players under contract."

City signed Brazilian forward Robinho to around 32.5 million pounds at the beginning of September shortly after the Abu Dhabi investment company signed a memorandum of agreement on the acquisition ..
