Benitez wary despite pulling clear of rivals

Rafa Benitez remained cautious of Liverpool's Champions League qualification hopes despite tightening their grip on fourth place with a 1-0 derby win over nearest rivals Everton on Sunday.

Spain striker Fernando Torres scored his 21st league goal of the season to pull the home side five points clear of their neighbours on 62 points with six matches remaining. "It's a good position to be in," the Liverpool manager told a news conference. "But we have a difficult game coming up at Arsenal and Everton will play Derby next week."

Benitez also praised Torres who equalled a club record for consecutive home goals to join Fred Pagnam , Roger Hunt as the only players to score in six successive games at Anfield.

"We had a lot of confidence in Fernando," he said. "But to score 28 goals and 21 in the league is not easy for anyone, especially for a player coming from a foreign country. "He has exceeded our expectations and we are pleased for him."

Everton manager David Moyes accepted his side were second best but has not lost hope that they can still clinch the final qualifying spot for Europe's showpiece event. "What was disappointing for us was we didn't create too many chances. We lacked penetration and we needed better movement up front," he said.

"The five-point advantage at this stage of the season is a good advantage. We have teams four or five points behind us as well and we are looking over our shoulders, so I would think the teams above us are thinking the same thing."(source:yahoo/afp)

Milan desperation weighing heavily on Ancelotti

With just seven matches left in the Serie A season, AC Milan are starting to panic. They sit sixth in the table, have lost their last two home matches and trail Fiorentina in the crucial race for fourth place by four points.

The only saving grace for Milan is that Fiorentina's current form is no better, having lost their last two away matches. Last season Milan claimed the Champions League title and in December they added the Club World Cup to their honours list.

Back then they had already given up hope of winning the title having got off to a dreadful start in Serie A, failing to win in their first seven home matches while city rivals Inter were storming away.

They reassessed their goals, set their sights on fourth place, and a ticket to the Champions League, and by the end of February, following six wins in seven matches, they looked all set to achieve that aim.

But it has all gone wrong since then.

Arsenal won 2-0 at the San Siro to knock them out of the Champions League in the second round and they have won only two of their last seven league encounters, losing three times.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti spent more than an hour in the dressing room following the 2-1 defeat to Atalanta on Sunday before coming out to face the press. "We're being incapacitated by the number of mistakes we're making at home," he said. "We're starting slowly and in the end we're paying for it. "We're not concentrating in several situations like against Sampdoria (their previous home defeat). Matches become very difficult when you do this."

Ancelotti joined his team's vice-president Adriano Galliani in criticising the referee, who disallowed two goals.

The first by Clarence Seedorf was offside but the second from Massimo Ambrosini was chalked off for a foul on the goalkeeper, which looked a harsh decision. "The referee played like us. He had a bad first half and a bad second half," added Ancelotti. "Ambrosini's goal should have stood. Having said that it's not his fault we lost."

Milan have not been helped by injuries among their forwards.

Ronaldo is out for the season, Filippo Inzaghi is out injured and world player of the year Kaka is also on the sidelines.

Alberto Gilardino is desperately short of form, meaning Milan are often relying on two 18-year-olds, Brazilian Pato and Alberto Paloschi, to fire them to victory.

It's not been working well."Now we need to change something," admitted Ancelotti. "We can't continue like this. We hope to have Kaka back for the next match.(source: yahoo)

Manchester United outplays Villa, Arsenal rallies against Bolton

Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United dominated Aston Villa 4-0 Saturday, and Arsenal rallied for a win 3-2 at Bolton to keep the English title race alive.

Ronaldo scored United’s first goal on an audacious backheel, nudging the ball between the legs of Villa defender Martin Laursen after 17 minutes at Old Trafford. He then set up strikes for Carlos Tevez (33rd) and Wayne Rooney (53rd and 70th).

United’s 24th victory gives the defending champion 76 points from 32 games. It holds a six-point lead over Arsenal with six rounds of matches to go. Chelsea has 68 points and can regain second from the Gunners by beating Middlesbrough at home on Sunday.

While United cruised, Arsenal came back from two goals and a man down at Bolton, where it had lost three seasons in a row.

Matt Taylor scored twice for the home side in the first half and Arsenal had midfielder Abou Diaby sent off in the 31st minute for an ugly, studs-up challenge on Gretar Steinsson. William Gallas replied for the 10-man Gunners in the 62nd minute, Robin van Persie netted a penalty six minutes later and Bolton defender JLloyd Samuel deflected a cross from Alexander Hleb into his own net.

Last place Derby was guaranteed relegation after drawing 2-2 with Fulham and 17th place Birmingham beat Manchester City 3-1.

Rival American goalkeepers Marcus Hahnemann and Brad Friedel made standout saves in Reading’s 0-0 draw with Blackburn, Sunderland edged West Ham 2-1 and Portsmouth beat Wigan 2-0. Sunday’s other games are Liverpool-Everton and Tottenham-Newcastle.source; yahoo

Liverpool, Everton battle for fourth

Liverpool head into the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Sunday (1500) knowing that victory would just about kill off Everton’s hopes of Champions League football next season.

Liverpool occupy the vital fourth place - worth a slot in the Champions League qualifiers - on 59 points, two ahead of Everton with a superior goal difference of nine.

With only six games remaining after this weekend, the Blues can ill-afford to slip up.

However, while Everton’s attention is focused on the league run-in, Liverpool will be diverted by the Champions League, where they face Arsenal twice either side of another meeting with them in the league in the first eight days of April.

If Liverpool do go on to reach a third final in four seasons, Everton fans will have a bigger incentive than usual to will them to lose if their side finish fourth in May. A Liverpool win would guarantee them a Champions League return at Everton’s expense.

Liverpool won the Champions League in 2005 but were pipped by Everton for fourth spot in the league and needed a UEFA rule change to allow them to enter the following season’s competition in the qualifying rounds.UEFA then amended the regulations to ensure there was no repeat of a country having five clubs in the group stage.

This will probably not be necessary if Liverpool repeat their controversial victory at Goodison Park in October, when Dirk Kuyt scored two penalties in a 2-1 win that has left Everton fans seething ever since.

The Dutchman had been lucky to escape a red card for an earlier wild lunge at Phil Neville, while Everton, who finished with nine men, were furious that their own clear claim for a late penalty was turned down.“It’s an important game, there’s no doubt about that,” Kuyt told Liverpoolfc.tv. “The derby is always big but this one is going to be really big. Everton deserve to be where they are at the moment but fifth will be okay for them this season.”

Both sides dropped points last week as Liverpool lost 3-0 to Manchester United and Everton were held to a 1-1 home draw by West Ham United having lost at Fulham in their previous game.Everton, who have a seven-point cushion over sixth-placed Portsmouth, are aiming higher than another crack at the UEFA Cup, which they exited on penalties to Fiorentina two weeks ago.“It shows how far we have come that we are looking up at Liverpool in fourth rather than down,” goalkeeper Tim Howard told www.evertonfc.com.source reuters

France beats England, Spain edges World Cup champion Italy in exhibitions

France spoiled David Beckham’s 100th appearance for England and Spain beat World Cup champion Italy in friendly games Wednesday.

The Netherlands rallied from a three-goal hole to beat Austria 4-3 as the 16 European Championship teams saw action. One of those nations, Poland, was routed 3-0 by the United States.

In an Asian World Cup qualifier, South Korea tied North Korea 0-0.

With England failing to qualify for Euros, the team hoped for a win to mark Beckham’s momentous appearance for his national team. But Franck Ribery scored from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute after England goalkeeper David James raced off his line and fouled Nicolas Anelka.“I was happy to start the game, but it was more about getting on the pitch, getting that 100th cap,” Beckham said.

While France readies for Euro 2008, England coach Fabio Capello is trying to build a team capable of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. But his team did little to worry France goalkeeper Gregory Coupet. “We were able to stop them playing their game. It was more of an intelligent match than a spectacular one,” France coach Raymond Domenech said. “We have a solid platform to build on. You don’t go far in a major competition unless you are well organized.”

Which is exactly what the Spaniards were in their 1-0 victory over Italy, scoring on a 78th-minute volley from David Villa. The Valencia striker met Fabio Cannavaro’s headed clearance just inside the area and curled his shot past outstretched goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon into the top left of the goal. “It was a difficult match … but we executed nearly perfectly,” Spain coach Luis Aragones said. “There’s still a lot of time until the Euro, though.”

Spain, which beat World Cup finalist France 1-0 last month, extended its unbeaten run to 14 games—a stretch of more than 16 months. Defending Euro champion Greece, Germany, and Romania also won, while the Czech Republic, Croatia and Turkey played to ties. Sweden, Russia, Portugal and Switzerland lost.

In the Netherland’s impressive comeback at Vienna, site of the Euros title game in June, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored two goals, including the winner in the 86th minute. Austria was leading 3-0 on two goals from Sebastian Prodl and another from Andreas Ivanschitz. But Huntelaar started the comeback in the 38th minute, with John Heitinga and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink also scoring to make it 3-3.

“We got 3-0 behind due to personal errors by our defenders, not because we were outplayed by Austria,” Netherlands coach Marco van Basten said. “But I was a bit surprised by their attacking and quick play in the opening 30 minutes.”

Poland lost badly to the United States, which got goals from Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu and Eddie Lewis. The three-goal margin of victory was the largest for the Americans in Europe since 1998. “We did well to finish on our set pieces today, which is a big part of our game,” Bocanegra said. “We took our chances, so we were able to sit back and they had to attack us, which makes it a bit easier for the team, because they had to chase the game since we got an early goal. But it definitely was not an easy game.”

At London in a rematch of the 1958 World Cup final, Sweden lost to Brazil 1-0 when 18-year-old Alexandre Pato scored in the 72nd minute, helped by a major blunder from substitute Sweden goalkeeper Rami Shaaban.

Mario Gomez helped his chances of making the German squad for Euro 2008 with two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Switzerland.

Defending European champion Greece maintained its 12-year unbeaten streak over Portugal with a 2-1 win in Duesseldorf, Germany. It was the first time the two countries played since the final of the 2004 European Championship, which Greece won 1-0.

Georgios Karagounis scored both goals against Portugal, which was missing star playmakers Cristiano Ronaldo and Deco.

Romania showed its potential when it beat Russia 3-0 in Bucharest on goals from Ciprian Marica, Daniel Niculae and Marius Niculae.

Croatia was held to a 1-1 draw by Scotland. Turkey drew 2-2 at Belarus. Jan Koller scored to salvage a 1-1 draw for the Czech Republic against Denmark.

Argentina beat Egypt 2-0 in Cairo on goals from Sergio Aguero and Nicolas Burdisso, and Mexico rallied to beat Ghana 2-1 in London.

After the politically charged World Cup qualifier in Shanghai, China, ended 0-0, North Korean players walked to the far end of the field to bow and wave to thousands of South Korean fans. South Korean players picked up on the gesture, standing in a line and waving to hundreds of North Korean supporters at Hongkou Stadium. “The next time in Seoul, I want to play in the same atmosphere like this because we are brothers, the same people,” said North Korea player Hong Yong Ho, already looking forward to the June 22 rematch.

Also in Asian qualifying, it was China 0, Australia 0; Qatar 2, Iraq 0; Bahrain 1, Japan 0; Oman 1, Thailand 0; Jordan 2, Turkmenistan 0; Singapore 2, Lebanon 0; Uzbekistan 3, Saudi Arabia 0; Kuwait 2, Iran 2; and Syria 1, United Arab Emirates 1.

In early-round CONCACAF qualifying, it was Barbados 1, Dominica 0; St. Lucia 2, Turks and Caicos 0; and Grenada 10, U.S. Virgin Island 0.

Barbados will play the United States in a home-and-home series in June. (source:yahoo/ap)

Beckham to win 100th England cap

David Beckham will play some part in England's friendly against France in Paris on Wednesday, when he will win his 100th cap, manager Fabio Capello said.

The Italian, who left Beckham out of his first squad against Switjerland in February, last week called him up for the Stade de France game and told a news conference on Tuesday that the midfielder would see some action.

"He will play, I couldn't possibly making him come from the United States and not play him, that would have been very cruel of me," Capello said of the LA Galaxy player, without saying whether he would start the match.

Beckham, who made his debut in 1996 joins Peter Shilton and Billy Wright in the England hundred club and Capello, who coached Beckham at Real Madrid, said the 32-year-old could go on to win many more caps.

"I know him well and I know what he can give me and what he can give the team," said Capello, whose first task as coach will be to qualify the team for the 2010 World Cup.

"As for the future we will have to see, but the David Beckham I know can certainly last and get to 2010 if he carries on training as he has done.

"He has always been a very good professional and only people like that can last so long."

Capello confirmed he had Beckham closely watched in LA Galaxy's pre-season matches in Asia and received good reports on his play and fitness.

The Italian also confirmed that defender Rio Ferdinand would captain the side against France as he continues his policy of rotating the role until he names a permanent skipper in August.(source:yahoo/afp)

Mascherano 'can't believe' red card

Photobucket

Javier Mascherano insisted on Monday he still had no idea why he'd been sent-off in Liverpool's 3-0 defeat away to champions Manchester United.

Liverpool's loss, which effectively put paid to any lingering Premier League title ambitions they may have had this season, was overshadowed at Old Trafford on Sunday by the sight of Argentina midfielder Mascherano getting his marching orders from referee Steve Bennett shortly before half-time.

Mascherano, who could yet receive more than the standard one-game ban because he failed to leave the pitch immediately after being red-carded, had already been booked for a foul when he persisted in asking why team-mate Fernando Torres had also been cautioned.

Bennett did not take kindly to this and gave Mascherano his second booking for dissent.Despite what happened, Mascherano told the Liverpool Echo here on Monday: "I do not know why I was sent off. I asked the referee what was happening. I did not swear; I was not aggressive and I did not confront him. "All I did was ask him what was happening, nothing else."

Mascherano visibly lost his temper after being shown the red card and had to be calmed down by manager Rafael Benitez and other members of the Liverpool coaching staff before accepting he had to leave the field. "When he (Bennett) showed me the second yellow card and sent me off I could not believe it," Mascherano said.

"I am sorry to my team-mates because that meant we went down to 10 men - and that made things even more difficult for us (Liverpool were only 1-0 down at the time).(source:yahoo/afp)"

Robben: No crisis at Real Madrid

Photobucket

Dutch international Arjen Robben on Monday denied suggestions of a crisis at Real Madrid

after the Spanish side lost its second straight league match over the weekend.

"The defeat was a disappointment but we played really well and I

don't think there is a crisis. What we have to do is remain strong and be conscious of what

awaits us," the 24-year-old striker told a news conference.

The defending champions saw their lead over nearest rivals FC Barcelona shrink to four

points after losing 3-2 to Valencia at home on Sunday.

It was Real Madrid's fifth loss this year in the league. Between August and December the club

-- which at one point this season had a nine point lead over FC Barcelona -- had suffered only

two defeats in the league.

Villarreal has also closed in on Real Madrid. The club is in third place with 56 points, six

fewer than Real Madrid, after beating last-place Levante over the

weekend.(source:yahoo)

Ferguson Happy After Liverpool 'Morale Booster'

Sir Alex Ferguson acclaimed a 3-0 victory over Liverpool as an ideal "morale booster" after his Manchester United side strengthened their bid for a second successive Premier League title with a resounding victory here at Old Trafford.

United's win left them five points clear of Chelsea, who later Sunday leapfrogged Arsenal into second-place by beating the Gunners 2-1, with seven games of the league season remaining.Goals from Wes Brown, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani saw off Liverpool, who had to play most of the match a man down after Javier Mascherano was sent-off in controversial fashion just before half-time.

The one possible cloud on the horizon for United, who have to play Arsenal in the run-in, was a knee injury sustained by Wayne Rooney.Ferguson will hope it is not severe enough to keep the England striker sidelined at a time when United are also bidding to win the Champions League having, in common with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, reached the quarter-finals of European club football's leading competition.

"The title race will go right to the end of the season," Ferguson said. "We've beaten a really strong Liverpool side and we did it with some really good football.

"That it was 3-0 against Liverpool, our biggest rivals, is good for the goal difference. We've done our job with three points but we won't get carried away," the Scot added. "It's a morale booster and a good confidence booster."

While United mull over what is now required to lift a tenth English title since 1993, Liverpool now await the result of Steve Bennett's report into Mascherano's red card.

The Argentinian midfielder would normally be banned for just one match after being shown two yellow cards but that may be increased depending on how the Football Association view his furious reaction to being sent-off for dissent as he attempted to speak to Bennett about his decision to book Fernando Torres.

Mascherano had to be dragged away by Xabi Alonso and the Liverpool coach Alex Miller before Reds manager Rafael Benitez tried to calm him. Benitez refused to attempt to second guess what fate is in store for Mascherano, saying: "The player was asking. I don't think that to ask is a big problem. He doesn't know the referees."

Following the debate that has raged since Ashley Cole's dissent in Chelsea's 4-4 draw with Tottenham in midweek, Benitez acknowledged that Mascherano was wrong to attempt to discuss anything with a referee in the current climate.

The Spaniard added: "The player told me that he was asking what happened and to get sent-off for that made him really, really surprised. "He could not understand why. The player knows he made a mistake but in this kind of game it is wrong to leave a team with just 10 players because one of them asked 'why?'. "It is clear that he knows he made a mistake. I talked to him in Spanish on the line and he told me he didn't say anything and that he was just acting. "Mascherano is a fantastic professional and has been playing at the maximum level for years and I was trying to tell him 'it's finished'.

"All of my people are disappointed and no-one is more disappointed than me. We had our chances but with 10 players it's just 'forget it'," Benitez added. "I think that when you are a professional and play a big game like this you are surprised and want to know why you are sent-off. "Mascherano was trying to work really hard, like everyone else, and we are disappointed with what happened."(source:yahoo/afp)

Drogba dan Henk ten Cate Bertengkar

Bomber andalan tim Chelsea, Didier Drogba, terlibat dalam pertengkaran sengit dengan asisten pelatih, Henk ten Cate, di ruang kamar ganti seusai laga melawan Tottenham Hotspur di Stadion White Hart Lane, London. Kejadian itu menjadi santapan empuk pers Inggris.

Striker Didier Drogba dikabarkan terlibat perang mulut dengan Heng ten Cate, asisten pelatih Chelsea, di ruang ganti White Hart Lane setelah The Blues dipaksa Totteham Hotspur berbagi gol 4-4. Surat kabar Daily Mirror memberitakan Drogba menumpahkan kekecewaannya karena membuat serangkaian pergantian membingungkan selagi The Blues berupaya mempertahankan keunggulannya atas tuan rumah.

Terlebih, The Blues harus menghadapi Arsenal, Minggu (23/3). Sumber: *Gusti Satya/goal.com

Ketika Rakyat Aceh Bentuk Timnas Sendiri?

Manchester United beats Bolton to go 3 points clear

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to give Manchester United a 2-0 victory over Bolton and a three-point lead atop the Premier League. In Wednesday’s other game, Robbie Keane equalized 2 minutes from the end and Tottenham tied Chelsea 4-4 to stop the Blues drawing level with second-place Arsenal.

With Manchester United-Liverpool and Chelsea-Arsenal to come on Sunday, the Premier League title race is heating up as the teams go into their final eight games.United has 70 points from 30 games, Arsenal 67 and Chelsea 65. Fourth-place Liverpool appears to be out of contention with 59.

Against a Bolton side which has won only once and now lost 11 times on the road, United cruised into a 2-0 lead inside the first 19 minutes at Old Trafford, where Alex Ferguson’s team has two more home games in a row.Captain for the game, Ronaldo gave United the lead in the 9th minute.Bolton failed to clear a corner and the ball dropped to the winger who fired it into the roof of the net to match George Best’s club record for a winger of 32 goals.Back from suspension after his red card against Portsmouth in the FA Cup loss, goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak blocked a close range shot from Kevin Davies.

A minute later it was 2-0, however, when Bolton needlessly gave away a free kick and Ronaldo powered a dipping 30-meter shot that flew inside the post. That made it 24 league goals in 24 starts for Ronaldo and the Portuguese star had taken Best’s mark.In a spell of Bolton pressure, Kuszczak made two good saves to deny Nicky Hunt and Gavin McCann and El Hadji Diouf had the ball in the United net from a free kick in the 56th minute only for referee Alan Wiley to rule it out because he hadn’t blown for it to be taken.

Didier Drogba headed home a cross from John Terry to give Chelsea a third minute lead at White Hart Lane. But Spurs, who beat the Blues 2-1 in last month’s League Cup final, leveled in the 12th when Jermaine Jenas swung in a free kick from the right and Jonathan Woodgate scored with a powerful header.

Chelsea regained the lead in the 20th minute when Joe Cole dribbled through the Spurs defense and supplied a pass to Michael Essien to chip the ball over goalkeeper Paul Robinson who had raced off his line.Cole made it 3-1 in the 52nd after taking a pass from Claude Makelele but Dimitar Berbatov replied for Spurs in the 61st, beating Terry in the air and heading home a cross from Tom Huddlestone.

Huddlestone then equalized for 3-3 in the 75th minute but Cole edged Chelsea back in front five minutes later. It appeared that Chelsea would draw level on points with Arsenal but Keane struck again with a shot into the top corner in the 88th minute to make it 4-4.

McBride Gives Struggling Fulham 1-0 Victory Over Everton

Brian McBride beat former U.S. teammate Tim Howard with a 67th-minute header Sunday, and Fulham

used all five of its American players in a game for the first time in defeating visiting Everton 1-0 in the English Premier League.
It most likely was the first time five Americans played for one team in a Premier League match and six appeared in one game.

McBride, Fulham’s captain, started along with goalkeeper Kasey Keller and Eddie Johnson. Defender Carlos Bocanegra

entered in the 74th minute and Clint Dempsey replaced McBride in the 88th.Simon Davies crossed the ball into the box after a run down the left side. Joseph Yobo failed to clear and the ball fell to

McBride. It was McBride’s second goal of the season and Fulham’s first league victory in more than a month.“I came across and happened to be in the right spot,” McBride said.

McBride played only three games in August before hurting his knee during a game. He returned to the team in February.“The goal was vital,” Fulham manager Roy Hodgson said. “For us the difference between one and three points in the match was

everything.”

Johnson came close to doubling the lead in the 88th when he sent a powerful shot just over the bar.The win was Fulham’s first since a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Feb. 3. The team is in 19th place with 23 points.“The back four were so strong right from the beginning, and we need to continue that every game,” McBride said.

Everton is trying to keep up with crosstown rival Liverpool in the race for fourth place and the final Champions League spot.

Everton has 56 points in fifth place, while Liverpool has 59 in fourth.Manchester City rallied past Tottenham 2-1 with goals from Nedum Onuoh and Stephen Ireland, and 10-man Wigan beat

Bolton 1-0.

Inter Leads with 67 Points

Inter Milan maintained its six-point lead in the Italian league by beating Palermo 2-1.Patrick Vieira scored his first league goal of the season in the fifth minute, heading in a soft pass from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Marco

Materazzi then scored an own-goal in the 25th to tie the score, but Luis Antonio Jimenez added another for Inter in the 36th.

Inter leads the league with 67 points, followed by AS Roma with 61. Roma beat AC Milan 2-1 Saturday.Third-place Juventus beat Napoli 1-0 with Vincenzo Iaquinta scoring the lone goal in the 88th minute.

The hosts had more chances, but had been unable to score until Iaquinta took a pass from Alessandro Del Piero and beat

Napoli goalkeeper Matteo Gianello with a low shot from inside the area.

Fourth-place Fiorentina beat Genoa 3-1 with a goal from Adrian Mutu, who returned after missing three weeks with an injury.

Parma, playing under coach Hector Cuper for the first time, was held to a 1-1 tie by Livorno. Cuper led Valencia to the

Champions League final in 2000 and ‘01 before moving to Inter Milan.

Barcelona Failed to Take Advantage

American-born Giuseppe Rossi scored on a penalty kick to help Villarreal beat Zaragoza 2-0 in the

Spanish league. Rossi scored his 11th goal of the season in the 65th minute. Nihat Kahveci also scored for third-place Villarreal, which is unbeaten in seven games.

Kalu Uche’s header in the 85th minute gave Almeria a 2-2 tie against 10-man FC Barcelona. Barcelona failed to take advantage of Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss at Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, moving within seven points

of its rival instead of five. Madrid leads the league with 62 points, followed by Barcelona with 55 with 10 games remaining.

Bojan Krkic gave Barcelona the lead in the 17th minute, but Ruben Pulido tied the score in the 33rd. Samuel Eto’o again put

Barcelona ahead in the 57th, but the team was then reduced to 10 men in the 72nd when Gabriel Milito tripped Juan Manuel

Ortiz for his second yellow card.

Simao Sabrosa scored one goal and set up one of Diego Forlan’s two to lead Atletico Madrid past last-place Levante 3-0 and

into fourth place with 47 points. Luis Fabiano scored both goals in Sevilla’s 2-1 win at Valencia, taking his league-leading total to 22 goals in 21 matches.source/yahoo/ap/p>

Arsenal needed an 86th-minute goal from Kolo Toure to salvage a draw in its game after former Gunner Jeremie Aliadiere scored for Middesbrough. It was the fourth consecutive league draw for Arsenal.

Both clubs now have 67 points but Manchester United is ahead because it has a better goal difference.Chelsea kept pace in the title race by beating Sunderland 1-0 and is third with 64 points.“I think the league now is bubbling up very nicely,” Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said before Arsenal played. “It should be a fantastic finish to the season.”

United dominated the match at Pride Park. Ronaldo scored in the 76th minute, taking a crossing pass from Wayne Rooney and volleying the ball past Derby goalkeeper Roy Carroll for his 31st goal this season.

John Terry scored for Chelsea in the 10th minute.

Liverpool finish off Inter Milan

type="text/javascript">

For the second time in a week English football's finest turned the San Siro into a killing field in the Champions League.

Liverpool', 1-0 victory has ended Inter's hopes thanks to Fernando Torres' 26th goal of the season to join the Gunners, Manchester United and Chelsea in Friday's quarter-final draw.

Just seven days ago Arsenal went through after defeating AC Milan in the same stadium.

Liverpool needed to defend magnificently in the first half but when Nicolas Burdisso was sent off after 50 minutes the visitors took control and got the goal they needed to make the Italians' task of recovering from a 2-0 first leg deficit an impossible task.

It fell to goal-machine Torres to finish off Inter's hopes after 63 minutes.

Aurelio fed Torres on the edge of the box. The Spaniard turned to fire a stunning shot inches inside Cesar's right-hand post to send the Red hordes behind the goal wild.

Rafael Benitez's side have been the better team in both legs and received an ovation not only from their own fans but the home supporters too.

Jamie Carragher played his 100th European match as Liverpool claimed the 12th European Cup quarter-final place in their history. going through on aggregate 3 - 0.

Ferguson furious after Cup exit

type="text/javascript">

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson pointed an accusing finger at referee Martin Atkinson after the FA Cup

quarter-final defeat by Portsmouth. Ferguson felt United had a penalty turned down when Sylvain Distin blocked Cristiano

Ronaldo, before Sulley Muntari's late winner from the spot.

Ferguson told MUTV: "It's absolutely ridiculous. I cannot explain it. "Managers get sacked because

of things like that and he's going to referee a game next week."

United had substitute keeper Tomasz Kuszczak, on at half-time for injured Edwin van Der Sar, sent off for a foul on Milan

Baros that led to Muntari's 78th-minute spot-kick. Ronaldo also revealed a lack of protection from officials had made him

"scared" to play his natural game. "Sometimes I say that this is the best league in the world, but sometimes they don't protect the

skilful players," said the Portuguese winger.

"After what happened to the Arsenal player Eduardo da Silva, I am scared to do my skills. "The referee against Portsmouth

was unbelievable. In the first five minutes, there were three fouls and he took no action and then he failed to give a penalty. It's

difficult to play like this. "Sometimes they just protect the defenders and I am thinking about having to change my game because

it is difficult to play like that. Diarra did not even try to play the ball when he tackled me and he wasn't even booked. It's a joke.

So often, there were fouls and the referee did nothing."

Ferguson also directed his wrath at Keith Hackectt, thegeneral manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Board.

"Hackett has got a lot to answer for in this country," said the Scot. "He's not doing his job properly. He should be assessed like

everyone else is assessed. I'm assessed as a manager, the players are assessed, referees are assessed. Martin Atkinson will

referee next week, no problem, but his performance today should not be accepted in our game.(source: bbc)

Chelsea, Roma, Schalke Advance to Quarterfinals

type="text/javascript">

Chelsea advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Champions League, beating Olympiakos 3-0 Wednesday night as Frank Lampard scored one goal and set up the others.

Michael Ballack and Salomon Kalou also scored at Stamford Bridge, helping Chelsea win the home-and-home series on 3-0 aggregate and join Arsenal and Manchester United in the final eight. AS Roma won 2-1 at Real Madrid on goals by Rodrigo Taddei and Mirko Vucinic to win on 4-2 aggregate. Schalke lost 1-0 in overtime at Porto, leaving the aggregate 1-1, then won 4-1 on penalty kicks to reach the quarterfinals for the first time.

Barcelona and Fenerbahce advanced Tuesday along with Arsenal and Manchester United. In the final quarterfinal, Liverpool goes to Internazionale of Milan next Tuesday with a 2-0 lead from the first leg. The quarterfinal draw is March 14.

At Chelsea, Ballack scored on a header from Lampard’s cross in the fifth minute, and Lampard knocked in a rebound in the 25th minute after goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis allowed a rebound on Ballack’s low, angled drive. Kalou scored from close three minutes into the second half.

At Madrid, Roma got a man advantage when Real defender Pepe was ejected in the 71st minute for a tackle on Mirko Vucinic. Taddei scored in the 73rd on a header, but Raul Gonzalez tied it off Robinho’s pass in the 75th. Vucinic scored in injury time. Real Madrid was missing Ruud van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder, who were injured, and Sergio Ramos, who was suspended.

At Porto, Lisandro Lopez scored in the 86th minute—four minutes after teammate Jorge Fucile was ejected—to tie the aggregate. Lopez received the ball with his back to goal, swiveled and shot past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.(source: yahoo/ap)

Manchester United, Barcelona and Fenerbahce also Advance

In other second-round games, Manchester United defeated visiting Lyon 1-0 on Cristiano Ronaldo’s 30th goal of the season to advance on 2-1 aggregate; Barcelona beat visiting Glasgow Celtic 1-0 to advance on 4-2 aggregate but lost Lionel Messi to a torn thigh muscle; and Turkey’s Fenerbahce won 3-2 on penalty kicks at Sevilla after the Spanish team won 3-2 to leave the aggregate score 5-5.

At Old Trafford, Ronaldo scored in the 41st minute and moved within two of Manchester United’s season record of 32 goals, set by George Best in 1967-68. “I feel very good and have scored a few important goals and I want to keeping going like that,” Ronaldo said. “The Champions League is the biggest competition. I think we have a good chance of winning it, but we need to clam down because there are other strong teams.”

type="text/javascript">

At Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez scored in the fourth minute. Messi, the competition’s leading scorer with six goals, pulled up as he made a run and left the field in tears in the 35th minute. The injury was similar to the one which sidelined Messi for six weeks in December and January, club officials said.

At Seville, Fenerbahce goalkeeper Volkan Demirel made two saves in the shootout, stopping shots from Enzo Maresca and Daniel Alves. Gokcek Vederson scored the decisive spot kick, sending his shot underneath the crossbar after Demirel dove correctly to deny substitute Maresca.

Sevilla built a 2-0 lead on goals by Alves in the fifth minute and Seydou Keita in the ninth. Deivid de Souza cut the lead in the 20th, but Frederic Kanoute made it 3-1 in the 41st. Deivid forced overtime by scoring in the 79th.

On Wednesday, Real Madrid tries to overturn a 2-1 deficit at home against AS Roma, Chelsea hosts Olympiakos after a 0-0 first leg. and Porto tries to rebound from a 1-0 deficit against visiting Schalke. In the final match, Liverpool goes to Internazionale of Milan on March 11 following a 2-0 win in the first leg.(Source:yahoo/ap)

Milan 0 - 2 Arsenal

Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

Cesc Fabregas performed a goalline clearance and scored Arsenal's late winner, as Milan's

defence of the Champions League is ended.

type="text/javascript">

Arsene Wenger feels defeating the Champions of Europe will help Arsenal to mature and

potentially do the Double. “I feel we delivered the game we wanted and I’m very proud of my team,” he said after the 2-0

victory at San Siro.

“Overall I feel it’s good for such a young team to beat a side with such quality as Milan and it’s

positive for the future of our team and our club.”

It was a tactical win more than anything else, as Andrea Pirlo and Kaka were kept quiet

throughout the two legs. “We decided not to give Pirlo and Kaka time on the ball and deserve great credit for having done

that for 90 minutes,” added Wenger.

This loss after a 0-0 first leg result at the Emirates Stadium confirmed the Rossoneri’s dismal

home form this season. “Football is always very difficult to know after the game whether you won because you were

good or the others were not so good. I have great respect for Milan and it can happen to lose at

home – it happens to everyone.”

Arsenal now become one of the top favourites to lift the trophy in Moscow in May and Wenger

isn’t happy with just European or Premiership glory.“The dream is to achieve the Double and this team is very hungry. We feel tonight’s victory will

help us to win the championship.”(Source:channel4)

THE NEW KING of Manchester United's

Photobucket

Sir Alex Ferguson has paid Carlos Tevez a huge compliment by likening Manchester United's Argentinian striker to the legendary Eric Cantona. Tevez has grown in stature at Old Trafford after his arrival from West Ham in the summer.

The 24-year-old has already scored 15 goals this season and is set to face Lyon in the second leg of the Champions League on Tuesday night. Like Cantona, Tevez can change the face of an important game as he proved in France with a late equaliser following a superb opener from Karim Benzema.

type="text/javascript">

In his programme notes, Ferguson said: "Carlos reminds me of Eric Cantona in the way that he has a knack of rising to the occasion with a goal just when it is needed."He often comes up with the goods away from home when you are up against it. I do not think anything fazes him and he keeps his cool in the box.

"He is proving to be a master at scoring the really important goals - the ones that give you a win or a draw, especially away from home. He did it at Tottenham to salvage a point as he made the result 1-1. He scored for a 1-0 win at Liverpool and he rescued us again by finding the net late at Lyon and nullifying their lead."

Victory over the French League leaders will see United equal Juventus' record in the competition of 10 straight home Champions League victories. Asked why his team is so formidable at Old Trafford in Europe against top teams, Ferguson quipped: "We have been good!"

He added: "Our home record in European football has been been the foundation of our group successes. "I have said it many times you need 10 points to qualify. If you get three home wins it is a big help. It means you only need a point on the road. The atmosphere at Old Trafford helps. There is a big stimulant for the fans to come to European nights. The players also increase their expectation levels to do well in these games."

Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic looks set to return to the side after a calf strain and resume his partnership with Rio Ferdinand. Ferdinand is aiming to make it third time lucky in the Champions League after being a losing semi-finalist with United last season and with Leeds in 2001.

United are still in with a chance of winning the Treble for the first time since 1999. And Ferdinand believes there is enough quality in the squad to cope with the Champions League, Barclays Premier League and FA Cup.

He said: "You do not deserve to be here if you haven't got that winning mindset. We are in a decent run of form and hopefully we can take that into Europe. Not many players have the opportunity to play in a Champions League final never mind win it. Hopefully we will be in with a shout but we will respect our opponents. To get to this stage you have to be a good team." (Source:sportinglife)

Inter’s Loss Leaves

Inter Milan lost its first game of the season, falling 1-0 at Napoli in the Italian league.Marcelo Zalayeta scored the winning goal in the third minute. With a soft touch, Zalayeta lifted the ball over the head of Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar, who was outside the area after failing to clear a long pass.

With strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Julio Ricardo Cruz both out, Inter coach Roberto Mancini started David Suazo and 18-year-old Mario Balotelli. Mancini replaced defender Christian Chivu, who had to leave with an injured shoulder at the beginning of the second half, with striker Hernan Crespo in a failed bid to spark his offensive.

Fiorentina got an injury-time goal from Pablo Osvaldo to beat Juventus 3-2. Osvaldo headed in a short cross from Papa Waigo in the third minute of injury time. Waigo had scored 15 minutes earlier to tie the score at 2-2.

Massimo Gobbi gave Fiorentina the lead in the 19th minute with his first goal of the year, but Mohamed Sissoko tied the score in the 29th with a bicycle kick. Mauro Camoranesi then put Juventus ahead with a volley off a cross from Alessandro Del Piero in the 57th.

Inter’s loss leaves it in first place with 61 points. AS Roma is second with 55 points after beating Parma 4-0 Saturday, while Juventus has 48 and Fiorentina has 47.(Source:Yahoo/AP)

Liverpool Beats Bolton 3-1

Liverpool improved its chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League by beating Bolton 3-1 Sunday in the English Premier League.Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen deflected a shot by Steven Gerrard into his own net in the first half and Ryan Babel and Fabio Aurelio scored in the second to give Liverpool 50 points.

Liverpool needed the victory to boost its chances of finishing in the top four and securing a spot in next season’s Champions League. And with an extra week to prepare for a match at Inter Milan in this season’s competition, manager Rafa Benitez fielded a strong team including Fernando Torres, Gerrard and Javier Mascherano.

Gerrard shot weakly toward goal in the 12th minute but his effort was heading wide until Jaaskelainen dived for it, causing the ball to flip back over his body and into the net. In the 60th, Dirk Kuyt hit the post off a cross by Jamie Carragher. The ball then rolled to Babel on the edge of the area and the Netherlands forward scored with a low shot. Aurelio stretched the lead 15 minutes later when he controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed past Jaaskelainen from the edge of the area.

Substitute Tamir Cohen, the son of former Liverpool player Avi Cohen, scored with a header to get a late goal back for Bolton, which has 25 points and is only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Everton kept hold of fourth place by beating Portsmouth 3-1. Aiyegbeni Yakubu scored two goals and Tim Cahill added the other. Everton has 53 points, but Liverpool can move into fourth place on goal difference if it beats West Ham on Wednesday.(Source:Yahoo/AP)
