Peru leave it late


Peru have snatched a draw in the dying seconds of their tie at home against Argentina. Esteban Cambiasso in the goal of 84 minutes seemed to have secrued points for the away side, but Johan Fano popped up at the last minute of injury time to rescue a point for Peru. Argentina move into a three-way tie for second on the table, four points behind leaders Paraguay.



Bolivia caused the surprise of the round of holding Brazil to a 0-0 draw in Rio de Janeiro. Defending Ignacio Garcia was sent off for the visitors on 53 minutes but the Seleçao could not find a way past Carlos Arias in the Bolivian goal.



Brazil now reach 13 points, and are ahead of Argentina and Chile only by goal difference. Thump Colombia Chile 4-0 in Santiago to live up to joint second place in South americas section of qualification for the 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa ™.



Gonzalo Jara opened the scoring for the hosts in 26 minutes, before top scorer Humberto Suazo doubled the lead seven minutes from half-time. Defender Ismael Fuentes and Matias Fernandez completed the defeat in the second period. Chile now move on to 13 points on the table and share second place with Brazil and Argentina.



Uruguay's charge towards a place in 2010 stuttered when South Africa were held to a 0-0 draw by Ecuador on Wednesday night. Although the result temporarily elevated to Celeste second in the ranking of South americas positions, coach Oscar Tabarez will see it as two points lost at home in Montevideo's Centenario. Ecuador remained three points behind their opponents.



Uruguay does not have to make three victories in succession, but can take encouragement from a third straight zero. The twice World Cup winners of the Fife will resume his attempt to reach South Africa 2010 in Argentina on October 11. Meanwhile, Ecuador will host Chile.
