Ruud Gullit resigned as the head coach of the LA Galaxy for personal reasons.

The Dutchman joined the club in MLS in November last year, but rumours of dressing room unrest have been commonplace in a party that has not won in their last seven games.

The former Chelsea player had returned to management in the United States after leaving Feyenoord in 2005.

Alexi Lalas has been dismissed as president / general manager at the club who became famous for the arrival of David Beckham. "We're stepping up and doing what we should do to straighten this thing," Galaxy spokesman Tim Leiweke said.

"There are two good people who for various reasons are not part of this organization today, and that's a shame. The fact is that players have to look deep within themselves and understand they have to be responsible for some of this. The Galaxy has not made the play-off for a couple of years. Punting this season is not acceptable."

First-team coach Cobi Jones is set to replace Gullit on a temporary basis.
