Man City home of shock, Villa win in the UEFA Cup

English clubs had a bitter-sweet night for the Uefa Cup in action on Thursday as Aston Villa won in Iceland, but the Manchester City face a tough task to qualify for the first round after a shock loss to FC Midtjyllandat.

City lost 1-0 to a Danny Olsen goal in the quarter of an hour and you'll have to do until the ground in the second leg of their second qualifying round game in Denmark in a fortnight time.

Aston Villa had a good game in FH Hafnarfjordur in Reykjavik as Gareth Barry, now linked cup Champions League to be moved to Liverpool before the transfer within fifteen days, got his name on the scoresheet in his victory 4 -- 1.

City had their chances to win the match however, twice hitting the wood through Daniel Sturridge and Martin Petrov. City almost went 2-0 down in the 72 th minute after a header derives from Dunne, but Petrov cleared off the line.

But I got back and almost equalised six minutes later only for Petrov superb free-kick back off the bar. Bojinov then turned quickly into the area, but sent his effort over the bar.

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes felt his side lacked match fitness. "Maybe we were a little behind them in terms of sharpness and match fitness, but that is no excuse for tonight," Hughes said ITV4.

"We have to reach the speed before the weekend and hopefully this game will help us know where we are and what we must do.In the first half we had too many mistakes and not forced to play in their means and not get trapped in our midst that is what happened. In the second half that put people behind the ball and played the rest did very well. We had to be more dynamic and personality and lead the game. Fair Play of the opposition despite the attack that they understand the game and runs well. We are below and some players are a little light so we are still in the market for players. The game is only half-time."

Meanwhile, in Iceland, Barry scored after just four minutes ahead of England manager Fabio Capello, making the most of defensive mishaps. Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor also scored before the break in the Laugardalsvollur Stadium and, although Matthias Gudmundsson pulled a return, Martin Laursen headed the ball home in the second half the meaning of Martin O'Neill's men should cruise into the second round after the fixture at Villa Park two weeks.

Villa clash with Manchester City in the Premiership action on Sunday but O'Neill said: "I could not think of everything about the game on Sunday until he had played tonight, but I was very happy with some of the football we played. We obviously need to strengthen our defense if we could, but I was very pleased to win tonight." -- soccerway--
