"This means the world to me to retain the cuff," said Terry said it was Italian Capello that he was going to be captain of England after training session on Tuesday morning.

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand, who was in managing to take over as captain, has been appointed vice-captain. "It was a bit more of a surprise because of the way Rio has shown by Manchester United and what they have achieved over the past couple of seasons," Terry said at a press conference.

"I was standing beside the River when the coach announced that he and addressed to me and shook my hand. This demonstrates the quality of man. I think the director showed what kind of captain I am at the end of last season. Gave me the give me a boost of the cuff against the United States when scored, and now I'm happy to have a chance to win a team of captaining England, "added Terry.

The week before that match Chelsea lost to Manchester United on penalties in the Champions League final in Moscow when Terry missed a penalty in the shootout that would have made the London club European champions if he had scored.

Capello, seated alongside his captain smiling, said: "John's big personality is why we chose him, but Rio is also important for the team that is the reason that made him the vice-captain.

"But the captain needs a great personality on and off the pitch and in the dressing room."

Terry made his England debut as a substitute in a friendly match against Serbia and Montenegro in June 2003, establishing himself in the part of the coming season. Terry has scored four goals for England, including the first in the rebuilt Wembley stadium against Brazil in June last year.

Looking to match with the Czechs on Wednesday, Capello added: "I want to see England play with spirit and without fear of tomorrow and with a great personality as a team. It's an important game for us, the last before the qualifiers and I want to take another step forward."
