Arsenal's pre-season thrown into chaos as Kolo contracts malaria

Arsenal's pre-season preparations were thrown into turmoil last night as central defender Kolo Toure was taken to hospital amid fears he had contracted malaria. Toure, 27, returned home to his native Ivory Coast during the summer break and is believed to have picked up the potentially fatal disease on that trip.

The Daily Star reported the player went for tests after feeling unwell yesterday. The paper claims Toure is thought to have contracted a mild form of the infectious disease.

A source said: 'Malaria is very serious and this could Toure lay low for weeks or months. He was in hospital until the small hours and released into the care of the Arsenal medical staff.

'He needs more tests back in London to establish exactly what has struck him down but initial thoughts are that it could be malaria. "(dailymail)
