Hierro Believes Of Spain

Fernando Hierro believes Spain are due for trophy championship Euro 2008. How action?

Spain has long been recognised as one of Europe’s football superpowers – they produce some the world’s best players, who play in some of the world’s best teams in one of the world’s best leagues.

Yet for all their clubs’ success, Spain have yet to win a major international trophy, failing to match the exploits of France, Italy and Germany despite being eternally tipped to challenge for top honours.

But as the European Championship draws nigh, Hierro is adamant La Roja – who will face the Unites States and Peru in friendlies prior to the tournament – can break their duck in Austria and Switzerland next month.

“I am convinced that one day we will win and it could happen during this European Championship,” said the former Real Madrid defender. “We have to play the finals with a lot of hope, ambition and humility, with the conviction we can fight for something important. We are aware of the fact that we have a great squad, a great manager and great players.”

Spain are pooled in Group D alongside Greece, Russia and Sweden; their first game is against Russia on June 10 at the Tivoli-Neu Stadion, Innsbruck.
