Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney admitted after the 5-1 win over Newcastle that his team were motivated by Arsenal's 2-2 draw against Birmingham City.
Rooney scored two goals in what was a Man of the Match display to guide the Red Devils to a crushing win over Newcastle at St. James' Park. Speaking to Setanta Sports after the game, he admitted that Arsenal's draw had helped motivate the team. “We saw the Arsenal result before we played and that made us want to win even more, if that's possible,” he said. "We knew we had to go out there and get three points, nothing less. “Now we have to keep working hard and winning to try and overtake Arsenal and hopefully stay there until the end of the season.” His first goal was set up by Ronaldo's cross from the left, while the second was a delightfully curled effort from just outside the box following a corner, something he was very pleased with. “I enjoyed my second goal. I'm always on the edge of the box for corners and I've been saying one will drop out to me and I'll score – thankfully that happened today,” he said. Arsenal have a three point lead over Manchester United, but must travel to Old Trafford. Both sides must also host Liverpool, as well as travel to Stamford Bridge, leaving the title race wide open.(Source:Neal Glew, Goal.com)
